“I’m a sketchbook artist at heart, and that discipline — along with time spent in a shared studio with some great artists — helped me develop my own visual language.”

Since 2003, Surry Hills has been Lew Keilar’s creative base, where he honed a fine-line ink technique built on years of travel sketching. These drawings later evolved into digital illustrations and animations.

In addition to his travel-based work, Lew is a skilled live sketch artist, portraitist, architectural illustrator, whiteboard animator, and award-winning 2D animator. His ability to visualise complex ideas quickly — with wit and clarity — appeals to art directors weary of lifeless, AI-generated renders.

“I value economy of line, and over time I’ve learned to let go of ego — a key to drawing live under pressure, whether beside a creative director or in front of a crowd with the camera rolling.”

That same energy flows through Lew’s personal life — from skiing, surfing and downhill rollerblading to expressive dance — and fuels the way he creates: fluid, responsive, and present. His Instagram accounts @lewkeilar and @lewsyourself.vr capture that spirit through his dynamic GoPro MAX photography.
